Softball Splits Doubleheader Versus Rider

EASTON, Pa. (www.lafayette.edu) - The Lafayette softball team split a doubleheader versus Rider on Tuesday at Metzgar Fields. The Leopards won game one 10-7 and were down 3-0 in game two when it was called for darkness.

Lafayette came out swinging in game one to record a season-high 15 hits and 10 runs. The Leopards got on the scoreboard in the first inning off a Becky Foley RBI single that scored Laura Schrager. The next batter, Leigh Minarick, stepped to the plate to bring in Liz Lucisano on a single to left field for a 2-0 Lafayette lead.

In the bottom of the second inning, Lucisano notched her first homer of the season that allowed Schrager to score. Foley knocked in her second RBI on a single that scored Mara Shainheit as Lafayette took a 5-0 lead.

Rider got its first run in the third inning when Amanda Tu singled, allowing Deanna Dovak to cross the plate. Lafayette responded by scoring three runs in the bottom of the inning for an 8-1 lead. Shainheit singled to score Danielle Bernotsky and Schrager while Erin Allison added the third run on a Rider error.

The Broncs' staged a rally in the top of the fourth inning to score four unanswered runs to cut the deficit to just three runs. Lafayette added two runs in the fifth inning on a Bernotsky triple that scored Samantha Lucas. Lucisano followed to belt a single to right field to score Bernotsky as the Leopards stretched their lead to 10-5.

Rider's Dovak homered to center field, scoring Heather Boyle, as the Broncs added two runs in the top of the sixth inning, but it wasn't enough as Lafayette held on for the 10-7 win.

Lafayette was led by Lucisano who went 3-for-4 from the plate with three RBI. Shainheit also batted 3-for-4, bringing in two runs while Becky Foley was 2-for-4 with two RBI. Bernotsky recorded two RBI on one hit while Minarick had an RBI on a hit for the Leopards.

Freshman hurler Jackie Fitzgerald picked up the win for Lafayette while Amy Magos pitched the final inning for the save.

In game two, Rider struck first with two runs in the third inning on a Dovak home run to center field. As the sky approached darkness, the Broncs added another run in the top of the sixth inning on a Tu homer to center field.

Rider's Devin Karcesky kept the Leopards without a hit in game two while striking out three batters and walking two.

Lafayette (2-13) returns to action on Saturday at Army at 1 p.m.
