EASTON, Pa. (www.lafayette.edu) - Learning how to win is not easy, and the Lafayette volleyball team is slowly fighting through its growing pains, enduring losses, but making improvements.
The Leopards dropped their Patriot League opener to Colgate 3-0 (30-24, 31-29 and 30-26), despite leading early in every game.
Catherine Herchenroder (Brooklyn, N.Y./Bishop Kearney) played inspired volleyball at the net for the Leopards, and while the freshman only recorded seven digs and four kills, she spearheaded an emotional team performance that has been absent from College Hill for years.
Sophomore Heidi Olichwier (Arlington Heights, Ill./Buffalo Grove) paced the Leopards' offense with 21 assists and four services aces.
Lafayette's .292 team hitting percentage in game two was the Leopards' highest all season, but in the end errors and Colgate's 50 team kills did them in.
Colgate got double-digit kills from Melissa Rawson (15) and Caity Whiteaker (11), and Amy Rawson chipped in with 21 assists and seven digs.
Lafayette has a chance to bounce back and level its Patriot League record when Bucknell comes to College Hill Saturday at 7 p.m.
