WEST POINT, N.Y. (www.lafayette.edu) - The Lafayette women's basketball team dropped to 1-1 in the Patriot League standings after an 89-54 loss at Army on Tuesday evening.
Colleen Fitzpatrick's 14 points, and Katie Kokolus' career-high 10 points led the way for Lafayette offensively. Lafayette senior Jen Bayer, who entered the game with three double-doubles in her last four games, went down with an ankle injury in the opening minute of the contest and did not return.
Bayer's injury opened up the middle of the Leopards' defense, and the Black Knights took advantage as evidenced by an early 14-6 run fueled by offensive rebounds and points in the paint to take a 29-15 lead.
Army forwards Katie Macfarlane and Shavonne Holden combined for 14 points and eight rebounds in the opening half, and the Black Knights outrebounded Lafayette 24-15 en route to a 36-22 advantage at intermission.
After Army stretched its lead to 50-29 early in the second-half, the Leopards' dug in defensively and slowly cut the deficit to 11. Offensively, Lafayette took the ball to the basket and also found Fitzpatrick on the block for two easy buckets. Freshmen Kristin Doherty, Kokolus and Brittney Rothweiler all chipped in during the run that made the score 50-39.
Army answered the Leopards by going back to Macfarlane. She contributed eight points in a three minute span and capped an 18-5 Army run with two assists that made the score 70-49 at the seven minute mark. When the Leopard defense collapsed on the junior forward on consecutive possessions, she first found senior Christine Gassman for a three point field goal, and the next time down Macfarlane hit a cutting Mallory Fritz on an underhand feed for an easy lay up.
Army did a majority of its damage on the offensive end in the paint and through Macfarlane, and finished the game shooting 55.6 percent from the floor, including 69.7 percent after intermission.
Macfarlane finished with a game-high 21 points and eight rebounds, and Holden netted 14. In all, 12 Black Knights scored, and the number one rebounding team in the Patriot League beat Lafayette 43-26 on the glass.
For Lafayette, Ashley MacLelland grabbed a career-high 10 rebounds to go along with seven points.
The Leopards return home for their Patriot League home opener against preseason favorite Holy Cross. Tip-off is scheduled for 1 p.m, with the Lafayette and Holy Cross men to follow.
