LEWISBURG, Pa. - Bucknell scored three runs in the bottom of the seventh inning of the nightcap of a doubleheader with Lafayette, coming from behind to claim a 6-5 win in the second game, and sweep the Leopards in Patriot League softball action on Sunday. The Bison won the first game in five innings, 11-1.
In the opener, the Orange and Blue tagged Lafayette for eight runs on five hits and one error in the opening frame. Senior Meredith Gill, who had a double and a triple in the inning, led off the BU half of the first with a two-bagger to the left field wall. Gill eventually scored on a wild pitch for Bucknell's first run of the game.
With two outs and the bases loaded, senior pitcher Lauren Box helped her own cause with a bases clearing double that fell just into left center field to give the squad a 5-0 lead. Sophomore Jill Pompeii followed with a single up the middle, and promptly stole second to put runners in scoring position. Gill stepped up and delivered her second hit of the inning, a triple to right field, to make it 7-0. Junior Kristen Potts recorded Bucknell's fifth hit of the inning with a single to the shortstop that plated Gill.
The Bison added two more runs in their half of the second, again capitalizing on two Lafayette miscues in the frame, to go ahead 10-0.
Lafayette got one back in the top of the fourth on a two-out rally. Meghan Davis singled down the right field line, and Amy Magos followed with a single to right center to move Davis to third. Megan Longo walked to load the bases, and Samantha Lucas came through with an RBI single to right field before the Bison got Gianna Lopreato to ground out for the final out.
Bucknell tacked on one more in their half of the fourth when freshman Alyssa Schneebaum, who reached with a single, scored on Gill's sacrifice fly to right field. The Bison sat the Leopards down in order in the top of the fifth to get the five-inning win.
Box pitched the complete game, giving up six hits and striking out three, while also going 2-for-2 at the plate with three RBI.
It was Lafayette that jumped on top first in the nightcap, scoring twice in the first inning on one hit and two Bison errors. Becky Foley delivered the only hit of the frame, a two RBI double to left center field.
Bucknell tied it up in its half of the inning on a triple by freshman Lauren Wible. Junior Angela Stackhouse reached on a two out single up the middle, and Wible followed with her triple to right field. Wible then scored on an errant throw from the second baseman, who was attempting to throw the lefty out at third.
The Leopards went back on top, 4-2, after a two-run third inning. Tara Martinho's double to right center scored Mara Shainheit, and Martinho eventually scored on a miscue by sophomore Jenny Ross.
The Bison got back within one, 4-3, in the bottom of the fifth inning. After Stackhouse reached base on an error, Wible delivered an RBI double to left field to get the run back.
Lafayette added another in the top of the seventh to carry the 5-3 lead into the bottom of the last inning. Bucknell used two Leopards errors, two walks, two passed balls and one wild pitch to manufacture three runs in the frame for the come-from-behind win.
Potts walked to start the inning, and advanced to second on a passed ball. Stackhouse drew a walk, before both runners moved to second and third on another passed ball. One out later, Potts scored on a wild pitch which also moved Stackhouse to third. Freshman Kris Devore's pop up to short stop fell out of Martinho's glove, scoring Stackhouse. Down to their last out, sophomore Kelli Haskins hit a routine fly ball to right field that dropped out of the fielder's leather, allowing Devore to score from second for the game-winning run.
Lafayette (4-16, 1-5) is scheduled to return to action on Tuesday with a 3 p.m. doubleheader at Villanova. Saturday's doubleheader against Bucknell that was postponed due to unplayable field conditions has been rescheduled for Wednesday, April 9 at 3 p.m.
