Lafayette Volleyball Goes 2-0 on Second Day of Tournament

EASTON, Pa. (www.lafayette.edu) -The Lafayette volleyball team defeated St. Francis (N.Y.) and Delaware State on the second day of the Lafayette College Tournament to improve to 5-6 on the season.

The 5-6 record not only improves the Leopard's win total by two from last season, but also equals the total number of wins the program has achieved since 1999. In the 1999 season, the team was 1-27, in 2000, the squad was 1-26, in 2001 they accumulated no wins, and in 2002 their record was 3-27.

In the first game of the day, the Leopards took on the Terriers of St. Francis College. Lafayette cruised to the victory 3-0 (30-12, 30-10, 30-25), with both Catherine Herchenroder and Veronica Canto-Ponce recording nine kills. Herchenroder, Heidi Olichwier, and Amanda Bodkin were all in double digits in digs, tallying 13, 14, and 11 respectively. Olichwier also led all players in assists with 32.

Natasha Green led St. Francis with six kills while Lydia Ann Harris had 13 digs for the Terriers.

In their second matchup, Lafayette easily defeated the Delaware State Hornets 3-0 (30-15, 30-25, 30-16). Freshman Canto-Ponce was the leader for the Leopards in the match, tallying 15 service aces, 14 kills, five assists, and three digs. Freshman Shannon Fisher also made an impact for Lafayette, recording six kills, three digs, and one block in the match.

Delaware's Keysha Tiller led the Hornets offensively, recording six kills. Desiree Abeyta had 14 assists for the Hornets.

Herchenroder now leads the team in kills with 96 and digs with 144. Canto-Ponce has 95 kills so far in the season. Olichwier leads the team in assists with 313 and service aces with 29.

In the other two matches on the second day of the tournament, Auburn defeated both St. Francis and Delaware. The Tigers took the first match against St. Francis 3-0 (30-22, 30-23, 30-18) and easily swept Delaware State3-0 (30-12, 30-6, 30-17) to be the only team to go undefeated in the tournament.

Ashlee Johns led Auburn with 29 kills for the day, while Maira Mogollon had 62 assists for the Tigers.

Lafayette will be back in action next weekend as they host their second tournament of the season at Kirby Sports Center. The Leopards will play Wagner on Friday, Sept. 19 at 7:00 p.m. They will face Howard and Columbia on Saturday, Sept. 20 at 10:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m. respectively.
