EASTON, Pa. (www.lafayette.edu) - Bucknell's Ori Adrabi broke a 1-1 tie with three and a half minutes remaining in regulation to hand the Lafayette men's soccer team a 2-1 loss on Sunday at the Metzgar Fields Athletic Complex.
It was a defensive contest from the outset. Lafayette (7-3, 2-1) was responsible for all four of the teams' combined shots in the first half, but none of those managed to find the net. The game was tied 0-0 at halftime.
Nearly 12 minutes into the second half, freshman Scott Hawkins broke the scoreless tie. Thomas Harju took one of the Leopards' six corner kicks on the afternoon and served it to the fray where Victor Krasij headed the ball to Hawkins. Hawkins quickly knocked it home to give the Leopards a 1-0 lead. It was Hawkins' team-leading fifth goal of the season and the ninth assist of the season for Harju. Harju is currently ranked first in the nation in assists per game.
Bucknell (4-5-1, 2-1) tied the match nine minutes later (65:30) as a set play resulted in a scramble in the box and an own goal that put the score at 1-1.
In the 86th minute, it looked like the match was headed to overtime, before Adrabi took a through ball from Scott Visnic and collected his third goal of the season and left the final at 2-1.
Neither goalkeeper was called on for much action during the match. Lafayette's Mike Tortora and Bucknell's Adam Edwards each made one save. For the match, Lafayette held an advantage in shots (7-5) and corner kicks (6-2).
The loss is the Leopards' first of the conference season and places them in a two-way tie for second place in the Patriot League standings, just one game behind American which has opened Patriot League play at 3-0.
Lafayette returns to action on week from today (Oct. 17), traveling to Navy for a 1 p.m. kick off.
