ANNAPOLIS, Md. (www.lafayette.edu) - For the second time in as many outings, Navy scored four second-half goals en route to a Patriot League win. Lafayette was the victim on Friday, as five different Mids scored in a 5-0 victory over the Leopards.
The match was delayed nearly an hour early in the first half, as a heavy thunderstorm brought lightning through the Annapolis area. Most of the match was played in heavy rain.
Maggie Curran's goal into an open net in the 29th minute provided Navy a 1-0 lead at halftime.
The Mids' offense exploded in the second half, scoring in rapid succession both early and late in the half. Claire Henry scored off a Curran corner at 52:06, while Sarah Hessinger found the net off a direct kick just over seven minutes later.
The score would remain 3-0 until the 74th minute, when Lauren Griebel headed in another Curran corner. Brigitte Fox capped off the scoring in the 84th minute, taking a pass from Stephanie Parker and scoring from 10 yards out for her team-leading sixth goal of the season.
Navy (8-6-1 overall, 2-3 Patriot League), which had lost back-to-back matches at American and Army by identical 1-0 scores, has now scored nine goals in its last two matches. The Mids netted four in the second half, including three in the final 18 minutes, against Lehigh in their last outing on Oct. 8.
Lafayette (3-9-0, 0-4) returns to action on Monday, hosting archrival Lehigh at 7 p.m. The match opens a stretch that sees the Leopards play at home three times in six days. Lafayette will host Wagner on Wednesday at 7 p.m., then Army on Senior Night at 5 p.m.
