Women's Basketball Falls to Wayne State, 76-65

YPSILANTI, Mich. (www.lafayette.edu) - Wayne State used a 9-1 run early in the second half to build a nine-point lead, then prevented Lafayette from pulling any closer than six over the final 11 minutes in a 76-65 win on the second day of the Eastern Michigan Classic on Saturday.

Kristin Doherty scored a team-high 16 points and Kara Stetler added 12 in the loss. Doherty was 10-of-12 at the foul line, while Stetler hit 4-of-8 from beyond the arc.

Lafayette (1-1) led 13-10 early in the opening half before Wayne State (1-1) reeled off a 14-0 run to take an 11-point lead. The lead eventually grew to 12, but the Leopards connected on 8-of-8 free throws over the final 3:30 to cut the deficit to four, 33-29, entering halftime.

Stetler opened the second half with a triple to cut the margin to one, but Wayne State scored nine of the next 10 points to build the lead back to nine, 42-33, with 16:32 remaining.

Lafayette drew within six for the final time on a pair of Maureen Johnson free throws with 10:59 left, but Wayne State rattled off nine straight points to build a 14-point cushion, 63-49, with 6:49 left. The Warriors hit 7-of-10 free throws over the final 1:16 to prevent a Lafayette comeback.

The Leopards hit just 14-of-54 shots from the floor, but knocked down 31-of-42 from the charity stripe. Wayne State was 28-of-35 from the line in a game that featured 56 total fouls.

Nicole Roger posted a double-double to lead three Warriors in double figures. She collected 18 points, on the strength of 10-of-10 shooting from the foul line, and 14 boards. Kristen Rogers added 14 points and Alia Clark chipped in 13.

Vanessa Van De Venter scored nine points, all from the foul line, and grabbed four rebounds, while Lindsay Myers added seven points and eight rebounds for the Leopards.

Stetler represented Lafayette on the all-tournament team. The sophomore guard scored 28 points in the two games, hitting 7-of-13 three-pointers. She also collected nine rebounds on the weekend.

Lafayette returns to action next Saturday, visiting Buffalo at 4 p.m.
