EASTON, Pa. (www.lafayette.edu) - UMBC hit 10 of its first 12 shots from the floor in the first half, and eight of its first nine in the second half, en route to a 73-57 win over Lafayette on Thursday.
The Retrievers shot 60.0 percent from the field for the game, including 11-of-19 from three-point range. Junior guard Matea Pender led the way with 22 points on 7-of-12 shooting. She hit 6-of-8 from beyond the arc and also collected six rebounds, four assists and three steals.
UMBC (4-2) hit four three-pointers in an 18-4 run that lasted 6:30 in the first half and turned an early 10-9 Lafayette lead into a 27-14 advantage for the Retrievers.
A 13-2 burst early in the second half bumped the lead to 62-33, the Retrievers' largest advantage of the night.
The Leopards (2-4) hung with the hot-shooting visitors early, knocking down five of their first six shots of the contest. Lafayette posted its second-best shooting night of the young season, shooting 41.7 percent.
Lindsay Myers scored 11 points in each half for Lafayette, finishing with a career-high 22 points. She connected on 8-of-14 shots from the floor and 6-of-9 free throws.
Sharri Rohde added 12 points on 5-of-7 shooting for UMBC, while Kara Stetler added nine for Lafayette.
Lafayette is back in action on Saturday, visiting Big East foe Georgetown. Tip-off is set for 1 p.m.
