EASTON, Pa. (www.lafayette.edu) -Despite having three players in double figures, the Lafayette women's basketball team fell to Holy Cross, 74-49 in Patriot League action on Saturday afternoon.
The Crusaders opened up the scoring just five seconds into the game on a fast break lay up by Maggie Fontana. Lafayette was able to keep the score close, tying it up at four on two free throws by Lindsay Myers with 15:51 on the clock.
Holy Cross got up by as many as seven halfway through the first stanza, 13-6, on a lay up and free throw by Kaitlin Foley.
Lafayette's Colleen Fitzpatrick capitalized on a dish by fellow co-captain Elecia Kruise to cut the lead to four, 15-11 with 9:18 left to play, but the Crusaders quickly built the lead back up to eight on a jumper by Shannon Bush with 6:57 on the clock.
A minute later, Myers sparked a Lafayette comeback, scoring the Leopards next six points to cut the lead to two, 19-17. A break away lay up by Shannon Dorsey tied the game at 19 with 4:39 remaining.
Holy Cross got back ahead by four on strong rebounding and shooting by Lisa Andrews, but two foul shots by Fitzpatrick at 2:09 and a jump shot by Myers at the 1:00 mark closed out the first half with the score tied at 23 all.
Coming back from the break, Holy Cross went on a 17-3 run to put the Leopards down by 14, 40-26, with 14:45 on the clock. Lafayette's Kristin Doherty converted two free throws and then followed up with a three pointer at 13:42 to end the Leopards scoring drought.
Naida Dupovac hit the first of two free throws at 11:13 to get Lafayette back within nine, but the Leopards were unable to get any closer, as Holy Cross built up a 13 point lead with two shots from the charity stripe by Brittany Keil at 6:55.
The Crusaders then went on a 7-0 run to put the Leopards down by 17, 62-45 after a fast break lay up by Sarah Placek with 4:15 remaining. Fitzpatrick hit the second of two free throws to cut the lead to 16, but Holy Cross hit another 8-0 run to build the lead to 22 with just over one minute remaining.
A lay up off a break away by the Crusaders' Meg Dahlman with 24 seconds on the clock closed out the game, putting the Leopards down by the final margin of 25.
Fitzpatrick led the Leopards with 13 points and nine rebounds. Myers added 12 points for Lafayette, along with six rebounds and two steals. Doherty was the third Leopard in double digits, scoring 11 for Lafayette.
The Crusaders' Andrews led all players with 17 points, while Keil added 13 points and eight rebounds. Fontana added eight points, seven rebounds and seven assists for Holy Cross (12-11, 7-3).
Lafayette (0-23, 0-10) will be back in action on Friday, Feb. 20 as the team continues its Patriot League schedule, playing at Bucknell at 5:30 p.m.
