EASTON, Pa. (www.lafayette.edu) - Lafayette was swept by Drexel in the home opener at the Metzger Fields Athletic Complex on Wednesday. Lafayette fell 6-0 in the first game, while Drexel scored three runs in the top of the sixth of the second game to escape with a 3-0 victory. The second game was called after six innings due to darkness.
Freshman Megan Averbuch (Centerport, N.Y./Harborfield) made her first collegiate start in the opener. She allowed just two hits in the first two innings, but surrendered four runs on five hits in the third. Drexel converted a pair of Leopard errors into two runs in the sixth inning to provide the final 6-0 margin.
Lena Aiken and Brianne Brown both collected three hits for the Dragons, while Elizabeth Fuller struck out nine in earning her second win of the season.
Lafayette collected just a pair of hits in the opener: one in the first and one in the seventh.
The second game was a race against the impending sunset. The teams combined for just five hits through the first five innings before Drexel plated three runs in the top of the sixth.
A pair of singles to lead off the inning and a critical throwing error set up Drexel's first run, while a two-run double by Brianne Brown brought home the other two runs. Lafayette went down in order in the bottom half and the umpires called the contest.
Amanda Heyser got the win in game two, striking out nine Leopards while allowing just three hits.
Lafayette (0-2) returns to action on Sunday, when it opens play at the Rebel Spring Games in Orlando, Fla. The Leopards play Tennessee-Martin and Fairleigh Dickinson on Sunday.
