Davis to Display Dunking Dominance in College Slam Dunk Contest

March 26, 2004

EASTON, Pa. (www.lafayette.edu) - Senior guard Winston Davis (Tampa, Fla./Tampa Prep) will represent Lafayette College in the 16th Annual Mountain Dew College Basketball Slam Dunk Championship. The event serves as a precursor to the Final Four and will be televised nationally by ESPN on April 1 at 9 p.m.

Davis was selected from a nationwide pool of 65 applicants that spawned a dunking field that is scheduled to include Julius Page (Pittsburgh), Andre Emmett (Texas Tech), Bobby Carter (Western Illinois), Myree Bowden (Pacific), Sylvester Willis (Southern Illinois), Cardell Butler (Utah State) and Tony Allen (Oklahoma State).

The University of Texas at San Antonio will host the event on its campus on Thursday, April 1 at 6:30 p.m. CST in the UTSA Convocation Center. It will be televised that same night at 9 p.m. EST on ESPN with Brad Nessler and Dick Vitale likely calling the action. Produced annually by Intersport and ESPN, the College Slam Dunk Championship takes place in the host city of the Final Four.

"I am really excited to be competing against some of the best players in the country," Davis said. "It's something to keep the competitive drive going after my college career is over. It's such an excellent opportunity that I hope to make the most of."

Davis was selected as an All-Patriot League First Team performer in 2003-04 after averaging 13.4 points and 4.4 rebounds per game while leading his team to an 18-10 record and a third place finish in the Patriot League.

"It's a great opportunity for Winston," said ninth-year head coach Fran O'Hanlon. "Competing in this event shows the type and quality of players we recruit and develop at Lafayette. For Winston, it gives him an opportunity to showcase his abilities on a national stage."

The College Slam Dunk and 3-Point Shooting Contest will initially air on ESPN on Thursday, April 1 at 9 p.m. EST and will be re-broadcasted on April 2 at 3 p.m. on ESPN 2, April 3 at 1 p.m. on ESPN, April 7 at 3 p.m. on ESPN and on April 11 at 1:30 p.m. on ESPN.
