EASTON, Pa. (www.lafayette.edu) - Lafayette was swept by Rider in a non-league softball doubleheader on Tuesday, dropping the opener 7-0 and falling in game two 3-1.
The Broncs (15-7) scored once in the second and twice in the fourth inning of game one on a trio of RBI singles. In the seventh, a pair of singles and a hit batsman loaded the bases with two outs, and sophomore catcher Jill Carrabus cleared them with a grand slam to left.
Heather Beintema was dominating on the rubber, striking out 15 Leopards while walking just two and scattering five hits. Only once did she allow more than one baserunner in an inning. Beintema improved to 7-2 and kept her earned-run average to a miniscule 0.61 in 53 innings pitched.
Gianna Lopreato (Belleville, N.J./Montclair-Kimberly) was 2-for-3 at the plate for Lafayette.
Sophomore pitcher Lauren Belowich (Edison, N.J./J.P. Stevens) took a no-hitter into the fifth inning in the nightcap, but Lafayette could not muster any support offensively in the 3-1 loss.
Rider converted three Lafayette errors into a pair of unearned runs. The Broncs third tally came via an RBI triple by Courtney Weed in the fifth. Lafayette dented the scoreboard on a single by Jill Masterton (East Brunswick, N.J./East Brunswick) that scored Abby Weichert (Glen Rock, Pa./Susquehannock) in the third.
The Leopards advanced runners to second and third with two outs in the seventh but could not bring them around to even the score.
Belowich struck out 10 Broncs against three walks, while Devin Karcesky allowed just two hits over the final four innings to earn the win in relief.
Masterton was 3-for-4 with three singles and an RBI to pace the Leopard offense.
