EASTON, Pa. (www.lafayette.edu) - Colgate outslugged Lafayette on Saturday in the first two games of this weekend's four-game Patriot League softball series, winning the opener 12-0 and game two 9-3.
The Raiders plated 11 runs in the first three innings of the first game, including six in the second inning alone. A grand slam by Colgate's Dorothy Donaldson keyed the six-run second; a solo shot in the fifth put Donaldson atop the Patriot League career home run list with 31. She finished the opener 2-for-2 with the pair of homers, walked twice, scored twice and drove in five. She also moved into first on the Patriot League career walks list with 65.
The Raiders (29-11 overall, 9-5 Patriot League) hit a total of five homers in the opener, while Elena Isaac allowed just one Leopard base hit while improving to 14-4.
Rachel Smith and Kim Olmstead were both 3-for-4 with two runs and an RBI.
Colgate took a quick 2-0 lead on a two-run homer by Nichole Rawson in the first inning of game two, but the Leopards (8-24, 2-12) immediately answered with two of their own in the second. Megan Longo launched a two-out double over the centerfielder's head that scored Megan Averbuch. Following a Michelle Ellis single, Longo scored from third on a wild pitch.
The Raiders took the lead for good with two runs in the top of the third. With two on and two out, Donaldson drove a single to left field that scored Smith and Danielle Soule. The Raiders added a run in the sixth and four in the seventh to extend the lead to 9-2.
Longo led off the seventh with her second career home run, a shot to centerfield that provided the final 9-3 margin.
Kate Howard went the distance for Colgate, striking out 10 and walking none while improving to 8-5.
Lafayette seniors Longo and Laura Schrager, following an impromptu ceremony honoring them between games, came up with their best offensive performances of the season. Longo finished 2-for-3 with the double and homer, scored twice and drove in a pair, while Schrager was 3-for-4 with a trio of singles.
The two teams close out the series with a doubleheader beginning at noon on Sunday at the Metzgar Fields Athletic Complex.
