EASTON, Pa. (www.lafayette.edu) - Lafayette dropped a pair of games to Wagner in non-league softball action on Tuesday. The Seahawks withstood a late Lafayette rivalry for a 4-3 win in the opener, then banged out 10 hits and took advantage of four Leopard errors for a 10-0 win in the nightcap.
Wagner starter Karen Refsnyder wasted no time in the opener, leading off the game with a single and advancing to third on a base hit two batters later. Refsnyder then scored the game's first run on a double steal.
That 1-0 lead held up until the seventh, as Refsnyder and Lafayette freshman Megan Averbuch matched each other scoreless inning for scoreless inning. Finally in the seventh, Christina Hopkins' two-run double keyed a three-run inning that put Wagner in front 4-0. All three runs in the inning were unearned, courtesy of two Lafayette errors.
The Leopards nearly forced extra innings in the bottom half. Erin Pawlak and Averbuch led off the inning with a walk and single, respectively. Freshman catcher Kathryn Longshore followed by driving her first career home run to left field, pulling the Leopards within a run at 4-3. Meghan Mannion then reached on an error, forcing Wagner to bring Morgan Miller out of the bullpen. Miller proceeded to retire the next three Leopard hitters for her third save of the season.
Averbuch went the distance for Lafayette, allowing just one earned run on seven hits. She walked three and struck out four.
Refsnyder struck out six batters while improving to 2-2.
The Seahawks (17-22-1) scored seven unearned runs in the 10-0 game two win. Leading 1-0, Wagner plated five runs with two outs in the fourth inning to blow the game open. The Seahawks collected four hits and took advantage of a pair of Leopard errors after the first two hitters of the inning were retired.
Wagner added four more unearned runs in the top of the fifth to invoke the eight-run rule after five innings.
Christy Sykora was 2-for-3 and scored twice, while Refsnyder was 2-for-4 and also scored twice.
Lafayette (8-28) collected just three hits in the nightcap.
The Leopards visit Army for a four-game Patriot League series this weekend, then close out the season with a non-league doubleheader at Manhattan next Wednesday.
