HACKENSACK, N.J. (www.lafayette.edu) - Lafayette's softball team earned a split in a non-league doubleheader at Fairleigh Dickinson on Wednesday. The Leopards dropped the opener, 4-1, but scored four runs in the first inning of a 6-5 win in game two.

Lafayette knocked out a season-high 11 hits, all singles, while plating a season-high six runs in the second game. Four different players collected two hits, helping offset another season-high five errors.

The Leopards scored their four first-inning runs on five hits and with the help of two FDU errors. With the bases loaded and one out, Megan Averbuch (Centerport, N.Y./Harborfield) reached on a fielder's choice, while Gianna Lopreato (Belleville, N.J./Montclair-Kimberly) scored on an error by the catcher. Kathryn Longshore (Philadelphia, Pa./Central) followed that with an RBI single to left, and after Lauren Belowich (Edison, N.J./J.P. Stevens) walked, Erin Pawlak (Point Pleasant, N.J./Point Pleasant) collected an infield single that scored Averbuch. Samantha Lucas (Garden City, N.Y./Garden City) brought Lafayette's final run of the inning home with a single up the middle that scored Longshore.

Lafayette stretched the lead to 5-0 in the fourth when Longshore drew a bases-loaded walk, but the Knights got right back in the game with a four-run fifth. Four Leopard errors in the inning led to the four unearned runs.

Lafayette plated an insurance run in the seventh on a one-out single by Lopreato that scored Belowich. The Knights (5-19) scored a run of their own in the bottom half and had two on with two out, but Belowich pitched out of the jam.

Belowich went the distance to earn the win. She allowed just one earned run on six hits and struck out three.

Longshore was 2-for-3 with a walk and drove in two, while Averbuch was also 2-for-3 with a walk and scored once. Lopreato and Lucas also collected a pair of hits.

In the opener, Dana Myers was 2-for-2 with a home run and a double, while Jennifer Whitley was 1-for-2 and scored twice for FDU.

Fairleigh Dickinson scored twice in the first on a sacrifice fly and RBI single, then plated single runs in the third and fourth. Caitlyn Reuter connected on a run-scoring double in third, while Myers homered in the fourth.

Nicole Webb allowed just four hits while striking out seven and walking one in the complete game win.

Averbuch, who took the loss, was 2-for-2 at the plate for the Leopards. Megan Longo (Ivyland, Pa./Council Rock) drove in Jill Masterton (East Brunswick, N.J./East Brunswick) with the Leopards' lone run in the fourth inning.

Averbuch finished the day 4-for-5 at the plate with a walk and a run.

Lafayette (7-19) visits Holy Cross this weekend for a four-game Patriot League series.
