BURLINGTON, Vt. (www.lafayette.edu) - Sophomore Kelli McMahon's goal in the 88th minute was too little, too late as the Lafayette women's soccer team fell to Vermont, 2-1, on Sunday in the finale of the Banknorth Soccer Classic at the University of Vermont. The Catamounts (1-1), who dropped a narrow 2-1 decision to defending Big 12 Tournament champ Oklahoma State on Saturday, scored a pair of goals 12 minutes apart in the second half to secure the win. Cass VanLeeuwen opened the scoring at 65:10, converting off a crossing pass from Melissa Witkiewicz. Witkiewicz also assisted on Amy Cochran's goal at 77:50, the eventual game-winner. Cochran played a through ball from Witkiewicz that she knocked past Lafayette keeper Amy Kalista. McMahon's goal came at 87:40 with the Leopards (0-2) forcing the action. Her shot caromed off the right post and into the net. Kelly Fitzgerald was credited with her first career assist on the tally. Kalista made seven saves in goal, including five in the first half. Vermont's Lindsay Carfagna needed just one save en route to her first collegiate win. Vermont out-shot the Leopards, 16-5. Oklahoma State claimed the tournament title with a 3-1 win over New Hampshire on Sunday. Junior forward Ellie Burke and senior defender Kelly Brady represented Lafayette on the all-tournament team. The Leopards are back in action next Saturday, visiting Mount St. Mary's at 1 p.m.
