EASTON, Pa. (www.lafayette.edu) - Lauren Pereira tallied three points, including the game-winning goal, for Holy Cross (3-11, 1-3) as the Crusaders edged Lafayette (1-9-3, 0-4) in Patriot League women's soccer action Saturday afternoon at Metzgar Field Athletics Complex.
Two first-half goals were enough for the Holy Cross to overcome the Leopards, as the Crusaders held Lafayette scoreless until freshman midfielder Jenny Polak netted the lone goal for the Leopards in the 65th minute. Sophomore forward Caroline Tuttle hit Polak, whose shot to the far left post got past Holy Cross keeper Jessica Pietrowicz.
In the opening half, Holy Cross jumped on the board in the 23rd minute, as Meighan Kelly took a long pass from Periera and put the ball in an open Lafayette net to go ahead 1-0. The Crusaders struck again in the 37th minute. This time it was Periera getting the score on a cross from Allison Hayes into the low far post of the net.
Holy Cross held a slight edge overall, out-shooting Lafayette 13-12. The Crusaders also held the advantage with five corner kicks to the Leopards' four.
Lafayette had its chance to get on the board at the 48:50 mark, but junior forward Kelli McMahon's shot hit the post and bounced out.
Sophomore keeper Mary Kate Erdman played all 90 minutes in goal, recording eight saves to Peitrowicz's six. In the 55th minute, Erdman rejected a shot one-on-one to prevent a 3-0 score early in the second stanza.
Lafayette continues its four-game home stand as the team hosts American on Friday, Oct. 21 at 7:00 p.m.
