WEST POINT, N.Y. (www.lafayette.edu) - In its first match of a Patriot League weekend, Lafayette volleyball was not able to overcome a potent Army offense in a 3-1 loss Friday night at Gillis Field House.
The Leopards fell in a tough 18-30, 30-25, 19-30, 23-30.
The Black Knights came out gunning in game one, hitting a tremendous .548 behind Braina Stremick and Elizabeth Lazzari.
However, the Leopards recovered and began to heat up in the second session en route to the 30-25 win. That would be the lone win of the night for the Leopards, who put up a valiant effort against a talented, hot-hitting Army team that sits in second place in the Patriot League.
Whatever momentum the Black Knights lost in game two, the team was able to regain and cruise to the match win.
Junior Veronica Canto-Ponce led the Lafayette attack with 11 kills to go with nine digs and two blocks. Defensively, sophomore Michaela Donohue managed 17 digs, while also contributing seven kills in the effort.
Sophomore Venessa Wilcox and senior Catherine Herchenroder chipped in with eight kills apiece.
Lafayette dropped to 12-11 overall and 2-6 in the Patriot League, while Army improved to 16-3 and 7-1 in league action.
The Leopards will look to rebound tomorrow in an afternoon match-up with Holy Cross. A 4 p.m. start is scheduled.
