RADFORD, Va. (www.lafayette.edu) - Four of Radford's five starters scored at least nine points and the Highlanders held Lafayette to 25 percent shooting in the second half to pull away for a 56-40 win in women's basketball on Sunday afternoon at the Dedmon Center.
Lafayette (3-4) led by as many as nine points twice in the first half, and held a 21-12 advantage with 6:43 left after a layup by Brittany Purr on a feed from Emily Garner. Radford (2-2) outscored the Leopards 13-1 from that point, using a basket by Johnette Walker to tie the game at 22-all with 1:02 remaining. Shavon Earp drained a three with six seconds left to give the Highlanders their first lead of the game, 25-22, at the break.
A layup by Kara Stetler forced the fifth tie of the game, 30-30, five minutes into the second half, before the Highlanders ran off an 18-5 stretch over the next 8:51 to lead 48-35 with 6:43 remaining. A jumper by Laura Cullen less than a minute later was the last field goal by either team until Garner hit a layup with 21 seconds left. Earp made her fourth three-pointer of the game with a second left to establish the final margin.
Earp scored 14 points, Serena White had 13 and Walker recorded 12 points, seven rebounds and six steals for Radford. Corrie Fertitta had nine points and eight rebounds and Sarah Stephens pulled down nine boards for the Highlanders, which used just seven players in the contest.
Purr was the lone Leopard in double figures with 10 points and six rebounds. Vanessa Van De Venter (six rebounds) and Stetler both had eight points, and Garner added five points, five boards and four assists.
Lafayette will be in action next weekend with a trip to UMBC for a 5:00 p.m. tip with the Retrievers in Baltimore, Md.
