LEWISBURG, Pa. (www.lafayette.edu) - Lafayette out-scored Bucknell 48-33 in the second half to overcome a 13-point deficit and complete the regular-season sweep of the Bison, 68-62, at Bucknell on Friday night.
The win marks the first time Lafayette has beaten the same team twice in a season since a pair of wins over Lehigh during the 1999-00 season, one of which was in the Patriot League Tournament. The Leopards' last regular-season sweep of a league foe was during the 1998-99 season, when Lafayette took a pair from Colgate.
Kristin Doherty led three Leopards in double figures with 13 points. She was just 3-of-10 from the floor, but hit the biggest shot of the night for Lafayette. With the visitors in front by three and the clock winding under a minute, Doherty stepped back at the top of the key and buried a three-pointer to put Lafayette up 66-60 with 56 seconds left.
Kara Stetler, celebrating her 20th birthday on Friday, scored all 12 of her points in the second half. She was 3-of-4 from three after halftime.
Lafayette's 48 second-half points were a season-high and the most since a 48-point first half at Colgate on Jan. 11, 2003. The Leopards' 89-80 win in Hamilton that night was also Lafayette's last Patriot League win on the road prior to Friday's win at Bucknell.
Lafayette (4-17 overall, 2-6 Patriot League) trailed by as many as 13 twice on Friday night, the final time just 2:30 into the second half. From that point, the Leopards out-scored Bucknell 26-12 over a span of 9:00 to take their first lead, 49-48, since early in the first half. The Bison (7-14, 1-7) twice cut the Lafayette lead to a single point, but the Leopards continued to come up with clutch baskets and defensive stops down the stretch to seal the win.
Bucknell looked to take control of the contest early, reeling off a 15-2 run to build a 13-point lead, 28-15, with just under 2:00 left in the first half. The Leopards, behind a basket by Naida Dupovac and three-pointer by Maureen Johnson, out-scored Bucknell 5-1 to close the first period down just nine, 29-20.
Lindsay Myers joined Doherty and Stetler in double figures for Lafayette. She tallied 10 points, five rebounds and six assists. Tricia Indoe, who earned the start at center in place of the injured Brianne Welte, added eight points and eight rebounds, while Shannon Dorsey added seven points and six boards. Welte came off the bench for 11 minutes in the second half and tallied two points and three rebounds.
Lindsey Hollobaugh led Bucknell with 19 points, while Rachel Hanley tacked on 12.
With the win, Lafayette improves to 3-1 in games played on Friday this season.
Lafayette wraps up its four-game road swing on Sunday, visiting Colgate at 1 p.m.
