CHARLOTTE, N.C. (www.lafayette.edu) - The Lafayette softball team finished its appearance at the UNC-Charlotte 49er Invitational with two six-inning, 8-0 losses to Conference USA opponents on Sunday.
In the morning session, sophomore Megan Averbuch held the host 49ers to one run in the first four innings before Charlotte came through with seven runs in the final two frames. All eight of Charlotte's runs were scored with two outs.
Christy Murray allowed one hit and struck out five to claim the win for the 49ers, which improved to 10-14-1 on the season. Kristi Killough had a double and two triples to spark the offense. Jackie Fitzgerald collected Lafayette's only hit.
Fitzgerald went to the circle for the Leopards in the second game against Saint Louis. Adrienne May walked to lead off the game and scratched out a run with a steal and good baserunning on a pair of outs. The Billikens got another run in the third and led 2-0 heading into the fifth. A pair of three-run frames sent Lafayette into the home half of the sixth looking for a run to extend the game.
Erin Pawlak and Jill Masterton put together back-to-back singles and a groundout moved the runners up a base, but the Leopards couldn't come up with a two-out hit to push the game into the seventh.
Ashley Levan earned the win for the Billikens (6-9) with seven strikeouts in her six innings of work. May scored all three times she was on base. Freshman Therese Taraschi got the last five outs for Lafayette.
The Leopards will look for their first win of the season as they play a doubleheader at Hampton on Wednesday, March 16 starting at 1 p.m. in Virginia Beach, Va.
