HAMILTON, N.Y. (www.lafayette.edu) - Kelsey Nordstrom and Kate Howard didn't allow an earned run in complete game performances as Colgate defeated Lafayette, 3-0 and 3-1, in a Patriot League doubleheader on Saturday.
In the opener, the Raiders used two errors to score their first run in the second, and a four-base hit by Dorothy Donaldson pushed the lead to 2-0 in the third. Colgate tacked on another run on a sixth-inning RBI single by Erin Gomez that scored Whitney Scott.
Nordstrom struck out 11 and allowed just four hits, while Megan Averbuch gave up two earned runs on six hits for Lafayette.
Colgate (10-11, 4-2 PL) loaded the bases in the bottom of the first inning of the second game, and a walk by Scott forced in the first run. The score remained 1-0 until Nichole Rawson and Erin Hanna both drove in runs in the fifth frame for a 3-0 advantage. Averbuch scored on a passed ball in the sixth for the Leopards' lone run.
Lauren Belowich went the distance in the circle for Lafayette (5-24, 2-8 PL). Howard fanned seven batters and earned her fifth win of the season.
Michelle Ellis, Averbuch and Jackie Fitzgerald each had two hits on the day for the Leopards.
Lafayette and Colgate will battle again on Sunday to close the series.
