Wong Resigns as Lafayette Softball Coach

May 12, 2005

EASTON, Pa. (www.lafayette.edu) - Lafayette softball head coach John Wong has resigned to pursue other professional opportunities, Director of Athletics Bruce McCutcheon announced on Thursday, May 12.

Wong completed his sixth season at the helm of the program this spring. In his first year, he was the Patriot League Coach of the Year after guiding a team that had finished in last place every season since entering the league to a third-place finish in the 2000 regular season.

Under Wong, Lafayette expanded its schedule to play the maximum number of games mandated by the NCAA. The Leopards went 11-34 in 2005, recording the most wins for the program since 1997. Wong finished with a record of 46-181 in his first head coaching stop.

Before Wong arrived at Lafayette, he was an assistant coach at Harvard for three years, where he helped guide the Crimson to the school's first-ever Ivy League championship and subsequent NCAA Tournament berth in 1998.

A national search for his replacement will begin immediately. Lafayette will return eight of nine starters and its top three pitchers for the 2006 campaign.
