PRINCETON, N.J. (www.lafayette.edu) - Princeton turned 28 Lafayette turnovers into 28 points in a 73-47 win in non-league women's basketball action on Tuesday night at Jadwin Gym.
Meagan Cowher led three Tigers in double figures with 18 points, while Vanessa Van De Venter scored 13 points for Lafayette.
Princeton (9-4) held a 15-0 advantage in points off turnovers and led 45-28 at the break. The Tigers gave the ball up just three times and shot 54 percent (18-of-33) from the field, while Lafayette (4-8) managed to shoot 50 percent (10-of-20) but committed 12 miscues in the first 20 minutes.
A three-pointer by Kristin Doherty tied the score at 13-all just under eight minutes into the contest before the Tigers ripped off a 26-8 run in the next eight minute segment. Cowher scored Princeton's first six points, and had 12 points and five boards in the opening half.
The Leopards sliced into a 56-34 deficit with a 9-0 run by holding Princeton scoreless for five and a half minutes in the middle of the second half, but the Tigers responded a 12-0 stretch of their own to put the game out of reach.
Jessica Spicer keyed Lafayette's spurt with a three-pointer, and had a steal and an assist on a layup by Van De Venter that pulled the `Pards within 13 at the 10:53 mark. Cowher's final bucket of the game extended Princeton's advantage to 25 with 5:26 remaining.
Becky Brown (12 points) and Whitney Downs (11 points) joined Cowher in double figures. Lindsay Myers and Kristin Doherty both netted eight points for the Leopards.
Lafayette will open Patriot League play on Saturday, Jan. 7 at defending league champion Holy Cross.
