WORCESTER, Mass. (www.lafayette.edu) - Holy Cross opened defense of its Patriot League championship with a 78-39 win over Lafayette on Saturday afternoon at the Hart Center.
Junior center Kaitlin Foley scored 16 points, Sarah Placek had 10 and four other players netted at least seven for the Crusaders. Lindsay Myers (10 points) and Emily Garner (eight rebounds) had team-highs for Lafayette.
The Leopards held a 7-1 lead five minutes into the contest and held Holy Cross without a field goal until Foley made a layup at the 14:05 mark. Kristin Doherty hit a three-pointer, Vanessa Van De Venter had a layup and Val Gomez made a pair of free throws to give Lafayette its early advantage.
Foley scored nine points in a 15-0 run as Holy Cross opened a 16-7 lead before Sue Izevbigie stopped the stretch with a jumper. The Crusaders went into the half with a 33-14 advantage.
Kara Stetler hit two three-pointers in the first three minutes of the second half and improved her season percentage to 47.9 (34-of-71) from beyond the arc.
Ten of the 11 Holy Cross players in uniform scored a field goal in the second half as the Crusaders put up 45 points after the break.
Lafayette will play its first home league game on Tuesday, Jan. 10 at 7 p.m. against Colgate.
