EMMITSBURG, Md.- (www.lafayette.edu) - The Lafayette women's soccer team would have preferred to play their third overtime game of 2006 under a little better conditions. However, a steady Tuesday afternoon rain was not enough to deter the Leopards, as they walked away from their final non-conference game of the year with a 1-0 victory at Mount St. Mary's.
Both teams spent the first 45 minutes getting a feel for the soggy conditions. Neither team was able to record a shot and Lafayette registered the only corner kick before the teams entered halftime.
A quiet first half led to a second half that was controlled by Lafayette, as they registered nine shots on Mount St. Mary's goalkeeper Anna Lebo.
Lafayette pressured the Mount defense with multiple scoring chances in the second half, with six Leopards recording at least one shot on goal after intermission. The best second half chance came when junior Brittany Downham flicked a header past Lebo from 10 yards out. However, Lebo was able to regroup and scramble back to make a diving stop before the ball crossed the line.
After a scoreless regulation, Lafayette struck in the second minute of overtime when their offensive pressure forced a corner kick. Sophomore midfielder Lauren Hinkel served the ball into box, where senior tri-captain Trista Burke headed the ball into the back of the net for her second goal of the season.
Lafayette out shot the Mount 10-3 in the game and held a 2-0 edge in corner kicks.
Junior goalkeeper Mary Kate Erdman registered three saves to record her third shutout of the season. Lebo tallied five saves in the loss for the Mount.
Lafayette now prepares for a do or die weekend set of Patriot League road games starting with American on Friday Oct. 20 at 3 p.m. before traveling to No. 17 ranked Navy on Sunday Oct. 22 at 1 p.m.
