WASHINGTON, D.C. (www.lafayette.edu) - The Lafayette women's soccer team battled to a 1-1 tie with American Friday afternoon at Reeves Field in Washington, D.C. The Leopards used a goal in the 81st minute from junior tri-captain Caroline Tuttle to register a 1-0 lead. The Eagles tallied the equalizer two minutes later before the teams played through two overtimes to each earn a draw.
After a scoreless first-half, American pressured the Lafayette defense with several scoring chances. However, the Leopard defense stood strong and kept the game scoreless deep into the second half.
With nine minutes remaining, Lafayette used a sequence of events to take the lead. Consecutive shots from the Leopard offense were turned away by American goalkeeper Alison Doyle. A high, arching shot from junior forward Kelly Koreyva was deflected by Doyle. A second rebound off the second Leopard shot came to the feet of Tuttle, who blasted a shot past Doyle and into the back of the net.
American knotted the game just over two minutes later when senior Meg Runeari sent a ball over the top of the defense from the left side 25 yards out. The ball took a high bounce over the head of Eagle Katelynn Donovan and landed at the feet of freshman Erin Koch who took two dribbles on the far right side of the box and beat the Lafayette goalie to the left corner halfway up the net for her first career goal and a 1-1 tie.
Overtime would give no chance to the scoreboard, as both teams walked off the field with one point in the Patriot League for their efforts.
The Leopards conclude their weekend trip on Sunday when they visit Patriot League frontrunner Navy at 1 p.m.
