EASTON, Pa. - The Lafayette men's basketball team raced out to an 11-2 lead in the opening six minutes and never looked back en route to a 72-54 win over Lycoming on Thursday night at the Kirby Sports Center. The win was the third straight victory for the Leopards who now stand at 4-6.
The Warriors opened the scoring on a basket by Greg Sye just a minute and a half into the game. Lafayette scored the next 11 points unanswered, starting with an Andrew Brown jumper and ending with a Ted Detmer lay-up with 14:50 remaining in the opening frame. Tri-captain Marcus Harley contributed to the Leopard run with six points on two jumpers and a lay-up off a Detmer assist.
The Leopards stretched the lead to 17 by the end of the half and took a 42-25 lead into the locker room.
Lafayette enjoyed its largest lead of the game, 69-42, with 5:27 remaining before head coach Fran O'Hanlon took the opportunity to get his younger players some game experience. Each Leopard was able register at least seven minutes of action.
Harley led the Lafayette with 12 points on 5-of-7 from the field. A balanced scoring attack saw Detmer and Paul Cummins notch nine points apiece, while junior guard Bilal Abduallah recorded eight. All of Lafayette's 13 players scored in the game.
"It was important for us to get a lead early and we came out strong," O'Hanlon said. "We executed and took care of the basketball. We had 20 assists and only 10 turnovers. I like the direction."
Sye and Jemayne Nowlin led the Warriors with 13 points each. Brown finished with six assists for the Leopards and Matt Betley chipped in on the defensive end with four steals.
Lafayette will take the weekend to prepare to host Columbia on Monday at Kirby Sports Center. Tip-off is scheduled for 7 p.m.
