EASTON, Pa. (www.lafayette.edu) - Bucknell used six straight goals in just under 30 minutes, covering the majority of the middle two quarters, as the catalyst for an 11-5 win over Lafayette in Patriot League men's lacrosse action on Saturday afternoon at Christy Mathewson-Memorial Stadium.
Kirk Klett scored five goals for the Bison, ranked No. 20 in the nation following a 7-6 double overtime victory over then-No. 1 Maryland on March 14, which improve to 4-4 overall and 2-1 in the Patriot League. Bucknell capitalized on advantages in face-offs (12-of-19) and ground balls (44-17) while holding the Leopards to 12-of-22 on clear attempts.
Leo Stinson scored early in each of the first two quarters to give Lafayette a 2-1 lead 15:36 into the contest, with the second goal coming compliments of an assist from Andrew Horton.
Tommy Moore leveled the score at 2-all two minutes later on a man-up situation for the first of four Bucknell goals in the second quarter. Klett's first of the afternoon came with 4:10 left before the half and gave the Bison a 5-2 lead at intermission.
Klett struck again two minutes into the second half and Nick Marks scored with 11:31 remaining in the third to stake the Bison to a 7-2 lead.
Sean Burek broke Bucknell's run with a man-up goal 29 seconds into the fourth quarter for the first of three scores for the Leopards in the final stanza. Horton converted a clear into a quick score with 13:03 left off a pass from Alex Heller as Lafayette solved Bucknell's pressure for a 9-of-11 performance on clears after halftime.
Steve Case hooked up with Klett for three fourth-quarter goals, the first coming with 10:21 remaining to make the score 8-4. John Galassi scored for Lafayette just over a minute later to cut the margin to 8-5, but Case found Klett for two late goals and Rick Carolan closed the scoring on an unassisted goal with eight seconds left.
Freshman Jeff Canfield made a career-high 20 saves for the Leopards as he faced 45 Bucknell shots. Matt Baran earned the win with 10 saves in 57:50 of action, while Matt Antonelli cleaned up for the Bison.
Lafayette will face St. John's on Saturday, April 1 in a 1 p.m. start at Rappolt Field.
