Leopards Get Offensive Early to Beat Wagner 3-1

Sept. 15, 2006

Box Score

EASTON, Pa. (www.lafayette.edu) - The Lafayette women's soccer team used two goals in the opening eight minutes of the game from juniors Kelly Koreyva and tri-captain Caroline Tuttle to defeat Wagner 3-1 in non-conference action at Mike Bourger '44 Field at Oaks Stadium on Friday night.

Before some fans could even settle into their seats, Koreyva took a pass from sophomore midfielder Jenny Polak and slid the ball past a diving Wagner goalkeeper Megan Lasky. The Leopards continued to control the opening minutes and struck again when Koreyva found junior forward Caroline Tuttle just outside the 18-yard box. Tuttle turned with the ball and put a left-footed shot past Lasky to give Lafayette a 2-0 lead with 31:51 left in the first half.

Lafayette used constant pressure to keep the ball in Wagner territory for the majority of the first half. However, with just 15 seconds left before halftime, Wagner forced a corner-kick. Seahawk midfielder Heather Daubert sent the ball across the box where sophomore Diane Gantenhammer one touched the ball into the back of the goal with six seconds reminaing in the half.

After the 15 minute intermission, the Leopards resumed control of the game. A physcial Lafayette team set the tempo much like the beginning of the first half. With just over 35 minutes remaining, Polak placed the ball to Tuttle, who turned and sent the ball just over the crossbar.

Lafayette put the game away in the 69th minute when Koreyva found sophomore midfielder Lauren Hinkel around mid-field. Hinkel turned with the ball and hit a streaking Brittany Downham racing along the right sideline. Downham dribbled in and beat Lasky for her first goal of the season and final goal of the game.

Head Coach Mick Statham was pleased with the win, but still sees room for improvement.

"I think we came out a little arrogant. We scored 27 seconds into the game and thought it was over. Hopefully it was a lesson learned and now we understand that we have to play 90 minutes," Statham said.

Koreyva and her teammates see Sunday's contest versus Iona as a chance to continue to improve on their two game winning streak.

"We'll be anxious to get back out here. We'll work hard at practice tomorrow and hopefully we can get another win on Sunday against Iona," Koreyva said.

The Leopards outshot Wagner 17-1 and evened their record at 2-2. The Seahawks fall to 0-5 on the season.

Lafayette ends their weekend homestand on Sunday Sept. 17 when they face Iona at 1:00 at Mike Bourger '44 Field at Oaks Stadium.
