EASTON, Pa. (www.lafayette.edu) - Playing for the second time in less than 48 hours, the Lafayette women's soccer team used a goal from senior Trista Burke to record a 1-1 draw with Iona College on Sunday afternoon at Mike Bourger '44 Field at Oaks Stadium.
The Gaels controlled the opening minutes, keeping the ball deep in the Lafayette defensive end. In the 21st minute, Iona freshman Laura McCoy received a pass from junior Chrstina Rizzi just inside the 18 yard box. McCoy made a move and placed a right-footed shot into the lower left corner of the goal to give the Gaels a 1-0 lead.
The goal seemed to spark the Leopards' energy level. Lafayette countered with several chances before intermission. Sophomore midfielder Jacquelyn Marchese's shot with just over 22 minutes left in the first half traveled just wide. Later, with the first half winding down, freshman Marissa Braverman crossed the ball into the middle of the box, where it was one-touched by junior Alison Hingley just over the crossbar.
When the Leopards came out for the second half, they immediately gained control of the tempo and ball. Consistent pressure from juniors Brittany Downham and Kelly Koreyva, along with Marchese led to a corner kick in the 55th minute. Sophomore Lauren Hinkel sent the corner into the middle of the box, where it found the head of Burke who beat Iona goalkeeper Suzzane Baldissard.
An energized Lafayette squad continued the pressure the rest of the game, but could not find the back of the net. As regulation time winded down, the Leopards made one final push. Downham found Koreyva, whose shot was stopped by Baldissard with just under 3 seconds remaining.
Two 10 minute sudden death overtimes kept the game tied, as the match ended in a draw.
Lafayette will look to increase its unbeaten streak to four, when the Leopards travel to West Long Branch, N.J. on Wednesday Sept. 20 to face Monmouth, before returning home to face St. Peter's on Friday, Sept. 22.
NOTES:
Head Coach Mick Statham:
On junior Arielle Field's season-ending injury: "Arielle suffered a torn ACL and a minor tear of the MCL when she blocked a shot in the Providence game. Unfortunately, she'll be sidelined for the rest of the season."
On the adjustments in the second half: "We had a very frank discussion at halftime. I was very proud of the way my team responded and the character that they showed. Our construction on offense was excellent. It was really a game of two halves."
On the endurance of his team this weekend: "I thought mentally we played well. Some of the players have been out here for over 200 minutes in 48 hours, and especially with today's warm temperatures, it takes a toll on you. I thought Ashley Yelland really played like an absolute warrior today."
