EASTON, Pa. - The Lafayette women's volleyball team (11-14, 3-6) dropped a hard-fought, 3-2 battle to second-place Colgate in a Patriot League match-up on Saturday afternoon. The Leopards took the first and third games to force a decisive fifth, but could not pull off the upset win over the second place Raiders.
Senior Maura Kelly had a double-double with 16 kills and 11 digs. Freshman Katrina Racibarskas had a team-best 18 kills on the afternoon while senior Michaela Donohue led the Leopards with 25 digs.
Colgate jumped out to an early lead in the first game but slowly chipped away at the lead. The game was tied at 22 after a kill from freshman Kayly Elmer. The game would see several more lead changes before the Leopards would go on to score the final two points of the game to win 30-28. Kelly had five digs in the game while junior Megan Carter chipped in 14 assists for Lafayette.
The Raiders took a quick 4-0 lead in the second game and held an eight-point edge at 12-4. The Leopards cut that lead to just four after a solo block by Kelly. That was unfortunately as close as Lafayette would come as Colgate built its lead back to eight at 21-13 and went on to a 30-18 win. Kelly added four more kills while Donohue had seven digs in the game.
Colgate again held an early lead at 8-3 but Lafayette again battled back to tie the match at 16 on a kill from Elmer. The Leopards would pull ahead by as much as six (22-16) after another kill by Elmer. The Raiders climbed back to within three at 25-22 and the game was tied at 26 before Lafayette would score four of the final five points to secure the critical 30-27 win.
Kelly served for five-straight points early in the fourth game, a stretch during which Racibarskas added two straight kills to give Lafayette an 8-3 lead. The Raiders came back, however, to take a 21-18 lead. Lafayette would tie it at 21 and remain within two of the lead but Colgate hung on for the 30-26 win to force a fifth game.
Colgate took a quick lead and held an 8-4 edge midway through the fifth game. The Leopards managed just four more points as the Raiders were victorious, 15-8, to secure the win.
With their win, the Raiders extended their win streak to six-straight and now hold an 8-1 mark in league play.
