EASTON, Pa. - The Lafayette women's volleyball team (9-11, 1-3) dropped a tough, 3-0 decision to Patriot League opponent Army on Friday night in Easton. Three Lafayette players recorded double figures in kills but it was not enough to overcome the Black Knights as the loss snapped the Leopards' three-match win streak.
Senior Michaela Donohue led the team with 12 kills while also adding four digs. Freshmen Katrina Racibarskas and Kayly Elmer again had solid performances, with Elmer recording 11 kills and four digs and Racibarskas chipping in 10 kills and six digs. Junior Megan Carter led the Leopards with 27 assists.
The first game was a back-and-forth battle with neither team taking more than a three point lead. The Leopards at one point held an 18-15 edge following an attacking error by Army's Elizabeth Lazzari. The Black Knights fought back to tie the match at 19 but Lafayette responded by taking a 22-20 lead on a Donohue kill. The match was tied again at 22 before Army would pull ahead for good. The Black Knights held a slim advantage at 29-28 but a kill from Jamie Clark secured the 30-28 win.
The night's second game was just as competitive as the first, with Army escaping with another 30-28 win. The Black Knights jumped out to a 4-0 advantage, a lead Army would not give up. Lafayette did make the game close, however, pulling within one of the lead at 25-24 following another kill from Donohue. The Black Knights continued to hang on to a slim one point lead before scoring the final two points of the game for the win.
Lafayette dropped the third and decisive match, 30-24. The game remained close in the beginning, with both teams knotted at eight after a kill from junior Ainhoa Barturen. Army took a brief lead before the game was again tied at 14 after another key kill from Donohue. The Black Knights again went ahead 17-16, this time for good. Lafayette had a chance for the come-from-behind win when an Elmer kill brought Lafayette within one (24-23) but the team got no closer as Army recorded its third Patriot League win of the fall.
Lafayette continues Patriot League play tomorrow afternoon when the Leopards host Holy Cross at 2 p.m.
