EASTON, Pa. - A packed Kirby Sports Center saw the Lafayette volleyball team capture a 3-0 win over Patriot League rival Bucknell Friday night. The Leopards won 25-18, 25-23 and 29-27 to record their third league victory of the season.
Friday also marked the Patriot League's recognition of the Side-Out Foundation's "Dig Pink Night," an event created to raise awareness about breast cancer. The Leopards and Bison worse pink warm-up t-shirts, fans were encouraged to wear pink to the match and donations were collected throughout the evening. All proceeds benefitted the Side-Out Foundation.
Three Leopards (9-15, 4-4) finished with double-digit kill totals, led by Cara Mulholland's match-high 16. The sophomore duo of Katrina Racibarskas and Kayly Elmer added 10 apiece. Senior co-captain Megan Carter led both squads with 35 assists and added in four service aces. Junior Kari Horn led Lafayette with 15 digs.
Lafayette opened the match with a 25-18 first-set victory. The Leopards led from start to finish after Carter opened the set with two straight service aces. Bucknell came within four (18-14) late in the set but pulled no closer as Lafayette went on to the seven-point victory.
The second set was closer than the first as this time it was Bucknell who jumped out to the early lead. The Bison held a three-point edge (19-16) and seemed in place for a win, but Lafayette tied it at 20 after an attacking error by Kyleigh McAhren. The score remained tied at 23 before Lafayette scored the final two points to win the set and take a 2-0 lead in the match.
It took extra points to decide the winner of the third set as both teams battled for the lead. Lafayette opened the set with seven straight points to take control early, but the Bison responded with seven straight of their own. After tying the set at 13, the lead changed hands for the remainder of the set. Freshman Ally Taylor tied it at 25-all and with the score in a 27 deadlock, the Leopards closed out the 29-27 victory with two straight points, including a game-winning kill from Elmer.
The volleyball team continues league play tomorrow when the Leopards host Colgate at 4 p.m.
