EASTON, Pa. - The Lafayette women's soccer team fell victim to an Army goal in each half, as the Black Knights spoiled the Leopards' 2008 league opener, grabbing a 2-0 victory over Lafayette on Saturday afternoon at Mike Bourger '44 Field at Oaks Stadium. Lafayette sophomore goalkeeper Brittany Futterknecht tallied five saves on the day.
With just under eight minutes left in the opening half, Army notched what proved to be the game-winner when it used a cross from Black Knight senior Amelia Janoski. A loose ball was collected by Army and put into the back of the net for the 1-0 lead.
Army doubled its shot margin from four to eight in the second half with four on goal and picked up an insurance goal when Dymon Washington beat Futterknecht on the near post for the 2-0 lead late in the second half.
The Black Knights held a 12-4 shot advantage along with a 3-2 margin in corner kicks. Futterknecht tallied five saves for the Leopards in her 90 minutes of work. Four players tallied shots for the Leopards, led by freshman Julia Bell's shot on goal that nearly found the back of the net midway through the second half.
Lafayette returns to action on Friday, Oct. 10 when it travels to Navy for a 7 p.m. kick-off.
