Men and Women Top American at Patriot League Quad Match

LEWISBURG, Pa. - Both the men and women were victorious Saturday afternoon, as the Lafayette swimming and diving team defeated American in a four-team Patriot League quad meet. The Leopard men fell to the host Bison and Navy, but dominated American 219-59. The women also dropped two head-to-head battles but squeaked by the Eagles 151-145.

The women were led by the 4x400 yard freestyle team, as the foursome of Maggie Deiseroth, Hilary White, Kerry Nichols and Marcella Nehrbass grabbed the victory in the final event of the day, touching in at 3:37.90.

The Leopards also used a strong afternoon from Jenn Nunn and Nehrbass, paced by Nunn's second place finish (10:41.88) in the 1000 yard freestyle. Nehrbass began her afternoon with two fourth place times, the first in the 200 yard freestyle (1:57.33) followed by a 24.46 mark in the 50 freestyle. She continued her meet with a second place showing in the 100 yard freestyle (52.69).

Lafayette gained a strong diving effort from Leah Goldberg, as she tallied 204.15 points on the one-meter board to garner a fourth place finish. Freshman Alex Brannick continued her strong start to the season, posting a 1:00.15 time in the 100 yard backstroke.

The men were paced by Steve Rubino's win in the 100 yard butterfly. The Berkeley Heights, N.J. native swam a 52.16 to grab the victory by nearing a second over Bucknell's Mike Volpe.

The squad began their afternoon with a third place finish in the 200 yard medley relay. Comprised of Josh Hollinger, Cory Schutz, Steve Rubino and Brandon Lawson, the four wrapped up a time of 1:37.84.

Schutz returned to record an individual third place finish in the 100 yard breastroke, touching in at 1:00.28. The diving tandem of Kevin Oswalt and Brian Cronise posted another successful day, as Oswalt (227 points) finished second on the three-meter board, closely followed by Cronise (213.65) in third.

The men wrapped up the day with an impressive showing in the 4x400 yard freestyle, grabbing the runner-up spot in the final event of the day. Jonathan Jenkins, Seth Price, Aaron Lampley and Michael Black combined for a 3:16.66 finish.

Lafayette will take the next three weeks to get ready for the annual showdown against archrival Lehigh on Nov. 21. Events are set to begin at 6 p.m. in Ruef Natatorium.
