EASTON, Pa. - The Lafayette men's lacrosse team reigned in the home portion of its 2008 schedule on Wednesday with a convincing 16-4 victory over Wagner at Rappolt Field. The Leopards were led by freshman Tom Perini's five goals and one assist on the afternoon.
Much like they did in its season-opener against Villanova, Lafayette (1-1) jumped out to an early lead in the first quarter. Steve Serling got the Leopards on the board with one of his three goals on the day less than three minutes into the contest. Serling concluded the afternoon with the hat trick, while also tallying three assists.
Back-to-back goals from Perini gave Lafayette a 3-0 lead with 6:37 left in the first quarter.
Wagner trimmed the lead to one (3-2) with 6:38 left in the second quarter before the Leopards lengthened its lead going into halftime. Three straight goals from Perini, Serling and John Galassi stretched the Lafayette lead to 6-2 going into the intermission.
Lafayette kept the pressure on and iced the game away in the third quarter behind four unanswered goals to open the third quarter. Galassi tallied his second of the day before freshman Franklin Floyd, Perini and Chris Ahern found the net.
Perini opened the final stanza with his fifth and final goal of the afternoon before Chris Prud'homme, Floyd, Serling and freshman Connor Brennan ended a stretch of 11 straight Lafayette goals with 6:20 left in the contest.
A Kevin Dunbar tally with 3:14 left sandwiched two Wagner (0-3) goals to conclude the afternoon and the impressive 16-4 triumph for the Leopards.
Three goalkeepers saw time for the Leopards, as junior Jeff Canfield got the start. Canfield surrendered only one goal in the first quarter before being injured on a collision in front of the goal.
Sophomore Vinny DePasquale relieved Canfield for the majority of the game until the 12:08 mark of the second half when Jason Montoya closed the contest out for Lafayette.
Lafayette outshot the Seahawks 43-12 on the day outhustled Wagner 37-23 on ground balls.
The Leopards return to action for the middle game of a three-game homestand on Saturday at 1 p.m. when they face Presbyterian at Rappolt Field.
