EASTON, Pa. - A packed house at Kirby Sports Center was not enough to spur the Lafayette women's volleyball team to victory in its Patriot League season opener against Army. The Leopards dropped a 3-0 decision to the Black Knights on Friday night.
Katrina Racibarskas and Ally Taylor led Lafayette with six kills each. Kari Horn tallied a match-high 16 digs while Megan Carter chipped in 14 assists.
Lafayette (5-9, 0-1) dropped the first set 25-18. The Leopards remained within striking distance for much of the set and the score was tied at 14 after a ball handling error by Army's Elizabeth Lazzari. The Black Knights (12-2, 1-0) went ahead for good at 15-14 but Lafayette remained close after a kill by Alana Taylor made it 17-16 in favor of Army. The Black Knights scored the final four points of the match to secure the seven-point victory.
Army never trailed in the second set en route to a 25-15 win. The score was close early as Lafayette cut Army's lead to one (7-6) after a kill by Ally Taylor. The Black Knights quickly stretched their lead to nine (16-7) midway through the set. Army's advantage remained in single digits before the scoring the winning point for a final 25-15 score.
The Leopards held an early 4-2 advantage to open the third set but Army tied it at five and went ahead 6-5 after an Ashton Rossi service error. Like in the second set, the Black Knights never relinquished their lead and won an 11-point decision, 25-14.
The Leopards wrap up the first weekend of league play tomorrow when they host Holy Cross at 2 p.m.
