EASTON, Pa. - Lafayette swept a 3-0 decision from the Coppin State Eagles in volleyball action on Wednesday evening. The Leopards surrendered only 35 points all night to record their first victory of the season.
Senior Ainhoa Barturen led both teams with eight kills while senior co-captain Megan Carter tallied a match-best 14 assists. Junior Ashton Rossi posted a match and career high seven service aces while classmate Kari Horn led with eight digs.
Lafayette (1-4) opened the match with a 25-7 win. The Leopards rattled off five straight points to take an early 9-2 lead after a service ace from Rossi. The Leopards went on to score 10 of the next 12 points and held a 19-4 edge after a kill from Barturen. Sophomore Kayly Elmer's kill ended the set to make the final score 25-7.
The Leopards recorded its second 25-7 victory of the night in the second set. The lead stood at 5-1 after a Barturen ace. Four consecutive service aces by Rossi gave Lafayette an 18-3 lead and the team closed out the win on an attacking error by Coppin State's Salena Weekly.
The third set was a back-and-forth battle. The Leopards fell behind early and trailed by four (6-2) after a kill from the Eagles' Tyler Phillips. Lafayette tied the game at 10 after an error by Coppin State (0-1) and the lead changed hands several times. The score remained tied at 17 before Lafayette went ahead for good on an attacking error by Phillips. The Leopards scored eight of the final 10 points and won the match on an attacking error by Lauren Lacey.
The Leopards return to action this Friday and Saturday when they host their annual Lafayette College Volleyball Tournament. Fairleigh Dickinson, Delaware State and St. Peter's will all make the trip to Easton to compete in the tournament.
