EASTON, Pa. - On the final day of the Lafayette Volleyball Tournament, the Leopards won their opening match against Delaware State before falling to Fairleigh Dickinson in the final match of the tournament. Sophomore Kayly Elmer finished the day with 28 kills, including 18 against Fairleigh Dickinson. Senior Megan Carter added 25 assists against the Knights to finish with 41.
Lafayette (2-6) opened the morning with a 3-0 shutout of Delaware State. Elmer led both teams with 10 kills while Kari Horn added a match-high seven digs. For the second match in a row, Carter and Ashton Rossi each posted double-digit assist totals with 16 and 14, respectively.
The Leopards won the first set 25-16. It remained close early but the Leopards took an 8-7 lead on a kill from Rossi and never again trailed. The final nine-point win came on a kill from Cara Mulholland.
The second set was closer with the Leopards winning 25-23. Delaware State held a two-point edge (20-18) before Lafayette tied it at 20 with a kill by Katrina Racibarskas. The game remained tied at 22 but Lafayette scored two of the final three points to take the win.
Lafayette held the Hornets to just 10 points in the third and decisive game. The Leopards went ahead for good after a kill by Elmer made it 4-3. The lead stood at a game-high 11 points (20-9) and the Leopards sealed the six-point win after a bad set by Martina Ferrari.
In their second match, the Leopards opened against Fairleigh Dickinson with a 25-23 victory. The Knights led by as much as five late in the game (21-16) but Lafayette came back to tie it at 23 and win it on a Mulholland kill.
The Knights won the second and third games 25-18 and 25-15, respectively. The second game was tied at 14 midway through but Fairleigh Dickinson went ahead for good on its next possession en route to the win. The Knights followed with a 10-point victory in the third game and did not trail after taking an 8-7 lead.
Lafayette rebounded with a 25-21 win in the fourth game to force a decisive fifth. In that fourth game, the Leopards won the four-point decision on a kill by Elmer. In the final game, the Knights opened with four straight points before Lafayette tied it at six. With the score tied 7-all, Fairleigh Dickinson went ahead permanently on a kill by Ali Philbrick to secure the 15-11 win.
The Leopards return to action next Friday and Saturday when they co-host the inaugural Crosstown Tournament with Lehigh.
