ANNAPOLIS, Md. - The Leopards, clinging to a one-point lead with one minute to play, could not hold on as they dropped a 53-48 decision to Navy in women's basketball action. In a game that featured eight lead changes, Navy's Cassie Consedine scored six unanswered points to close the game and hand the Leopards their first league road loss of the season.
Jessica Spicer drained two threes in less than two minutes to give Lafayette (7-11, 1-2) a 48-47 lead with 1:25 to play, but the six points by Consedine, including two free throws with six seconds remaining, sealed the five-point win for the Midshipmen (8-10, 1-2).
The Leopards, who saw two players reach double figures, shot 75 percent from the free throw line but connected on only 33 percent of its shots from the field. LaKeisha Wright led the team in scoring for the third straight game with 13 points. Amanda Smith chipped in a career-best 10 points.
The teams traded threes to open the game and Wright kept it a tie game (7-7) with two free throws at the 15-minute mark. Nearly three minutes went by before the game's next basket when Meaghan Malone's jumper gave Lafayette a 9-7 edge, and two free throws by Wright with 9:08 on the clock made the score 13-9.
Another four minutes elapsed without another basket before Navy's Kalen Kropa made it a one-point game (15-14) with her basket at 3:42. Less than a minute later K.C. Gordon gave the lead back to the Midshipmen, 17-15, after her three-pointer. A three-point play by Wright with 30 seconds to play knotted the game at 20, but Myers' three as time expired gave Navy a 23-20 edge at halftime.
A 6-0 run by the Leopards to open the second half put them back in the lead (26-23) and Cristin Zavocki's three-pointer with 11:30 on the clock kept Lafayette up by three (36-33). Angela Myers tied the game at 39 with a fastbreak layup at the seven-minute mark and the lead proceeded to change hands five times over the course of play before Navy sealed the win in the final minute.
The Leopards host Patriot League opponent Bucknell on Wednesday at 7 p.m.
