EASTON, Pa. - It was Super Fan Day on College Hill on Saturday afternoon and fans filled the stands at Kirby Sports Center to see the Lafayette volleyball squad take on Army. Unfortunately, the Black Knights came away with a 3-0 win to hand the Leopards just their fourth home loss of the fall.
Army (16-3, 4-0) won 25-16, 25-16 and 25-20. The Leopards (9-6, 1-3) had only 18 kills on the afternoon, led by Alexandra Russo's five. Kari Horn had 15 digs, a match-high, and Russo added 12. Ashton Rossi and Christy Mebust had three service aces apiece as Lafayette had six to Army's two.
The Black Knights never trailed in the opening set and at several points led by as many as 10. They ended the set on a kill from Ariana Mankus, who finished the day with nine kills.
Lafayette jumped out to a 4-2 lead in the next set but Army quickly pulled ahead, 5-4, and would stay in the lead for good.
The third set was a tightly contested one as there were 11 score ties throughout the course of play. Lafayette took its first lead, 6-5, on an Army attacking error and it remained tied at 19-all late in the action. Army then went on to score six of the set's final six points to clinch the match.
The Leopards close out their six-match homestand on Tuesday with a 6 p.m. match against Howard.
