LEWISBURG, Pa. - The Lafayette women's soccer team surrendered an early goal to Bucknell on Friday night before going back and forth with the Bison for the remainder of the game but fell 2-0 at Emmitt Field in Lewisburg, Pa.
Bucknell established itself in the Leopard defensive zone early, posting a sixth minute goal and putting Lafayette into an early 1-0 deficit. The Leopards responded and held their own for the rest of the first half, pushing back with a 37th minute chance from sophomore Dana Moyer.
Moyer sent a long ball on goal from the left sideline before the Bucknell goalkeeper took a few steps back and pushed the ball off the back post and over the goal.
Trailing 1-0, the Leopards nearly found the equalizer when freshman Jill Dozier sent a shot from the top of the 18-yard box to force the Bucknell goalkeeper to make the save. Minutes later as the weather made a turn for the worse, the Bison grabbed an insurance goal in the 62nd minute and capped off the game with a 2-0 win over Lafayette.
Moyer paced the Leopards with four shots. The Leopards grabbed seven saves from freshman goalkeeper Lauren Smedley.
Head coach Mick Statham was disappointed with the result, but suggested the statistics didn't reflect the Leopards play throughout the 90 minutes.
"It's a disappointing score but not with the effort or the attitude from our players. I thought at times we played extremely well, but the difference was two very good finishes from a very good player. I think the shot count is very misleading but that's to take nothing away from the quality of the two goals."
The Leopards will hop on the bus again tomorrow, traveling to Hamilton, N.Y. for a Sunday afternoon contest with Colgate. Kick-off is set for 1 p.m.
