SMITHFIELD, R.I. - Despite two players reaching double figures, the Lafayette women's basketball team could not come up with enough points and lost a 56-47 decision to Bryant on Saturday afternoon.
Elizabeth Virgin led all players with 13 points while LaKeisha Wright chipped in 12, but a balanced Bryant team saw all but one of their 10 players score at least two points. The Bears bench outscored the Leopards', 19-6.
Lafayette (1-3) shot just 62.5 percent from the free throw line and collected only 24 rebounds to the Bears' 42. The Leopards did, however, force 25 Bryant turnovers.
Lafayette actually opened the game on an 8-2 run that included baskets from four different players. The team maintained a five-point advantage (19-16) on a Sarah McGorry jumper midway through the half.
The Bears (1-2) proceeded to put together a run of their own, holding Lafayette to just five more points for the remainder of the half while scoring 14 of their own, including the final basket of the period that made it 30-24.
It became a 10-point Bryant lead (36-26) three minutes into the second half on two Courtney Schermerhorn free throws.
Lafayette slowly chipped away at that lead, and an Alexandra Serowoky layup in the paint with eight minutes on the clock made it a two-point game (43-41).
Much like in the first half, though, the Leopards fell into an offensive slump and struggled to put points more on the board. The Bears held Lafayette to just two baskets over those final eight minutes to clinch the nine-point margin of victory.
The Leopards finally return home on Tuesday to take on Liberty at 6 p.m. The game is part of doubleheader with the men's team facing Hartford at 8:30 p.m.
