EASTON, Pa. - Despite facing a double-digit deficit several times throughout the night, the Lafayette women's basketball team did not stop fighting but ultimately could not pull off a come-from-behind win, falling 59-48 against Mount St. Mary's.
Lafayette, which at one point trailed by 13, found itself within five of the lead with 10 minutes to play, but never pulled any closer. The loss was the fifth straight for the Leopards, who fall to 1-6 on the season.
LaKeisha Wright led the way with a season-high 17 points and Lauren Jackson chipped in 12. Elizabeth Virgin had seven boards, three of which came on the offensive end, and Melissa Downey contributed a career-best seven assists.
Mount St. Mary's (3-3) shot 39 percent from the floor, but sank half of its three-point attempts (6-of-12) and converted an impressive 95 percent of its free throw opportunities (19-of-20).
The Mount's Sandra Andresson accounted for the game's only basket in the first three minutes of play before Jackson tied the game at two with 16:30 on the clock.
A basket from Wright, her third of the half, four minutes later kept it a one-point game (9-8).
Lauren Howell's three-pointer with more than eight minutes to play put Mount St. Mary's up by five (17-12) and two Andresson free throws made it 23-16. The Mount proceeded to go up by double digits thanks to a 10-0 run that made it 29-16 with four remaining.
A minute later, Jackson drained the Leopards' first three of the night, bringing the lead back down to 10 (29-19). Downey's jumper made it an eight-point contest at 29-21 but Lafayette found itself back down by 10 (31-21) at halftime.
Virgin made it a seven-point contest, 35-28, with 15:15 with which to work. Jackson's basket at the 10-minute mark cut it to 42-36, and an Alexandra Serowoky free throw put the Leopards within five of the lead (42-37), the closest they had been all half.
That was also as close as they would get to the lead, as Mount St. Mary's worked its way back into a double-digit lead to seal the win.
The Leopards hit the road on Wednesday to face Penn. Game time is 7 p.m.
