HACKENSACK, N.J. - Lafayette's season-long six-game road trip did not start out on a positive note as the women dropped a 69-39 contest to Fairleigh Dickinson on Wednesday night. The Leopards' offense had its chances to score but could not put the ball in the net en route to the 30-point loss.
Lafayette (2-8) saw only one player reach double figures as LaKeisha Wright finished with 11. The Leopards gave up 23 second chance points to the Knights (3-5) and committed a season-high 24 turnovers that translated into 23 FDU points.
Wright accounted for the Leopards' first four points of the night and it remained a tie game four-all after four minutes of play.
FDU's Jordan Sykes broke the tie with a layup that made it 6-4 in favor of the Knights. That basket opened a 15-0 FDU run during which the Leopards went 10 minutes without a basket and fell into a 19-4 hole.
Lauren Jackson finally broke the drought with a fastbreak layup at 8:30. Including that basket, Lafayette managed six points over the next three minutes but could not prevent the Knights from finding the basket and trailed by 14 (24-10) with four minutes to play in the opening half.
A three-point play by Mariyah Laury made it 29-10 at the two-minute mark and two Sarah McGorry free throws marked the Leopards' final points of the period as they went into the locker room trailing 34-15. Laury finished with a game-high 17 points and was one of five FDU players in double figures.
Coming out of halftime, Lafayette struggled to close the gap and found itself trailing 45-21 five minutes into the period.
Laury was fouled on a three-point attempt and sank all three free throws to make it a 48-24 game with 13 minutes on the clock.
The Leopards trailed by 30 (63-33) after two Jackson free throws at the four-minute mark but finished the half with only nine more points than in the opening half, making the chance of a comeback out of reach.
The Leopards are back on the road on Saturday with a 2 p.m. game at Princeton.
