WEST POINT, N.Y. - The Lafayette swimming and diving teams made the trek to West Point, N.Y. on Saturday afternoon to take on league foes Army and Colgate in a Patriot League tri-meet. The Leopard women came away with a convincing 157-141 victory over Army, while both teams fell to Colgate.
The women were led by a first place finish in the 200 yard medley relay. The foursome of Marcella Nehrbass, Kristen Tyler, Maggie Deiseroth and Hilary White clocked in at 1:40.12 to grab the victory in the final women's event of the day.
Later in the day, Nehrbass was the fastest of the Leopard sprinters in the 50 yard freestyle, settling into third place at 24.90 seconds. White followed her medley performance up with a third place finish in the 500 yard freestyle (5:13.39).
Freshman Alex Brannick came up just short in the 100 yard backstroke, claiming the second place spot with a 1:00.96 finish, less than two seconds off the pace.
Sophomore Maricate Conlon was impressive in the 200 yard backstroke, placing second with a time of 2:12.60. Two events later, Conlon's classmate Laura Jordan clocked in 2:34.87 in the 200 yard breaststroke for a third place time.
Senior Kerry Nichols had a strong performance in the 200 meter IM, finishing in second place with a 2:16.87 time. Nichols was followed closely by teammates Stephanie Zielinski in third (2:18.71) Conlon (2:19.31) in fourth and Jordan (2:20.43) in fifth.
On the men's side, Cory Schutz recorded a third place time (59.72 seconds) in the 100 yard breaststroke.
Steven Rubino and freshman Stephen McCormick teamed up for a second and third place finish in the 100 yard butterfly. Rubino timed in at 52.43 with McCormick just behind at 53.05.
Brendan Lawson followed the women's impressive 200 IM performance up with a third place finish of his own, just three tenths of a second off the pace.
On the diving boards, Brian Cronise and Kevin Oswalt both finished second and third respectively in the one board, before switching spots on the three meter. Cronise totaled 222.40 points in the one meter and 233.60 on the three meter board, while Oswalt racked up 215.30 and 255.95.
The women divers were once again led by Leah Goldberg, who tallied 205.05 points on the third meter board to claim the second spot.
The Leopards now set their eyes on Patriot League Championships later in February. Lafayette will take the next few weeks to train before heading out Interstate 80 to Bucknell for the first day of competition on February 19.
