BETHLEHEM, Pa. - After Lehigh blanked the Lafayette softball team 2-0 in the first game of Sunday's doubleheader, the Leopards had its rival on the ropes late in game two. Owning a 2-0 lead in the top of the fifth, the Leopards let the Mountain Hawks rally for a 3-2 victory and claim each contest of the four-game series.
Although Lafayette's offense rocked Lehigh pitcher Lisa Sweeney for six hits in the first game, the hurler still managed to strike out eight and never gave up a run. The Mountain Hawks (25-14-1, 11-1) scored both of its runs in the bottom of the second thanks to Audra Wood's single up the middle.
Lafayette (8-20, 4-8) was limited to two hits in the second game, but the Leopards nearly handed Lehigh its second league loss of the season.
In the top of the fifth, Lafayette loaded the bases after Amanda Parker and Christina Giambrone drew walks and Kasey Karr reached on fielder's choice. When Stacey Dorn reached first on a fielding error by the left fielder, Karr and Parker crossed the plate to boost Lafayette to a 2-0 advantage.
Lehigh came back in the bottom of the sixth with doubles from Alisha Gonzales and Alex Cueva, who each brought in a run to knot the score.
After Lafayette left Giambrone stranded in the top of the seventh, the Leopard defense got two quick outs. However, Lehigh squashed any hope of extra innings when Sweeney doubled to centerfield to bring home the game-winning run.
The Leopards host Holy Cross on Saturday and Sunday and the first pitch will be thrown at noon each day.
