EASTON, Pa. - The Leopards made quick work of their two opponents on Saturday, defeating Delaware State 3-1 and Fairleigh Dickinson 3-0 on the final day of the Lafayette College Volleyball Tournament.
Lafayette (3-1) hit for better than a .260 average in both victories. Kayly Elmer combined for 24 kills and Alana Taylor added 23 over the two matches, including 16 in the win over Delaware State. Kari Horn had double-digit digs in both matches (16 and 13) and Ashton Rossi posted match-highs in assists (37, 32) in both contests.
The Leopards took the first match 25-19, 25-15, 22-25 and 25-16. Elmer fell just one dig shy of a double-double with 15 kills and nine digs and Taylor hit for a .481 percentage with 16 kills. The Hornets scored just 15 points in the second set as Lafayette led by as many as 10 (22-12) over the course of play. The Leopards clinched the match on a fourth-set attacking error by Cassandra Joyner.
Lafayette's momentum carried through to the final match of the afternoon as the squad swept the Knights 25-18, 25-13 and 25-23 in a contest that took just over an hour. In the 12-point, second-set victory, the Leopards jumped out to an early 11-5 lead on a kill from Rossi and scored five of the final six points of the set to secure their win. In the third and decisive set, Rossi clinched the match with her fifth kill of the contest.
In the day's middle two matches, Fairleigh Dickinson defeated St. Peter's 3-2 and Delaware State defeated St. Peter's 3-0.
Lafayette is on the road Wednesday with a 7 p.m. match at Coppin State. The Leopards return home next weekend to co-host the Crosstown Tournament with Lehigh on Friday and Saturday.
